There have been a lot of rumours surrounding the revival of the Jeep Wagoneer. Why? Because Jeep has kept pretty hush hush about the Wagoneer, choosing not to release any information about the concept model. Despite the limited information, Jeep's CEO Mike Manley has been talking lots about the Wagoneer to generate excitement within the Jeep community.
History lesson time. The Wagoneer was a popular Jeep model from 1963 until 1991. Its 28 year run was the third longest in United States automotive history.
Back in the 1960s, off-road vehicles were often considered as tractors rather than passenger cars. You would only see families drive in coupes, sedans, and wagons. Driving a tractor, agricultural equipment, or utility vehicle for city-driving was a ridiculous sight.
But then came the Jeep Wagoneer. During the 60s, Willys-Overland Motors, an American automobile company before it was sold and eventually became Chrysler, hired industrial designer Brooks Stevens to design a new four-wheel-drive wagon that would compete within the passengers vehicle market. Stevens came up with a design that became known as the Wagoneer, which was first sold in 1962.
Although the Wagoneer was an off-road utility vehicle, it had the appeal of a traditional passenger car. It was spacious, stylish, and comfortable. It was available in a two or four-door body. It was also engineered with an inline six engine and available in either rear-wheel drive or a four-wheel drive system. The Wagoneer did not have the rugged and rough utility wagon look. It simply looked like a family vehicle.
The Wagoneer pioneered the 4x4 market segment. It was the first big, powerful, off-road vehicle for families. It set the bar for all the popular 4x4 vehicles we have come to know today. The revival of the iconic Wagoneer will definitely carry traits of the old models and at the same time, breathe new life.
When the new Jeep Wagoneer is released, we expect that it will compete against other premium SUVS like BMW and Ranger Rover. As a result, the Wagoneer will become Jeep's most luxurious model when it is released. For a premium model, buyers should expect the price to be in the range of $65,000 to $100,000.
